Rhodri Morgan, Wales's First Minister, has announced the Welsh Assembly's approval for four Welsh universities to receive a share of £5.1 million to develop a Low Carbon Research Institute. The institute, which will be led by Cardiff University and will include Bangor, Swansea and Glamorgan universities, will focus its research effort around two main themes. Low carbon energy generation, storage and distribution will examine how targets for renewable energy uptake can be met, while carbon reduction and energy efficiency will tackle energy demand, examining measures to reduce energy use and their potential effect.
