FE college pay deal struck
Further education college employers and union leaders have reached a new agreement on pay that is expected to avert threatened industrial action. Both sides have agreed to recommend acceptance of a 3.5 per cent increase backdated to August 2002. The Association of Colleges has also agreed to advise institutions to make an additional allowance of 0.5 per cent, effective from April and payable from August on completion of modernising pay arrangements.
Aberdeen hosts scholars' reception
Aberdeen University is tonight hosting its first annual scholars' reception to introduce the donors of scholarships worth £6 million to students benefiting from their generosity. Funds have come from individuals, companies, trusts and foundations as part of Aberdeen's ambitious £150 million fundraising campaign.
Indian v-c resigns over plagiarism charge
An Indian University vice-chancellor has resigned after a panel endorsed allegations that he had plagiarised the work of a Stanford University physics professor in an academic journal. But B. S. Rajput, vice-chancellor of Kumaum University, said he would appeal against the verdict. The allegations prompted seven Stanford faculty members at University, including three Nobel Laureates, to write a letter urging Indian president Abdul Kalam to launch an inquiry into the allegations.
Governor apologises for Orangeburg massacre
South Carolina governor Mark Sanford has issued a formal apology for an incident 35 years ago when white highway patrolmen opened fire on black civil rights demonstrators, killing two South Carolina State University students and wounding other students in what has become known as the Orangeburg massacre.
