Government gives Darwin Initiative further £7m
The government today gave a £7 million boost to help animals and plants in developing countries in the second phase of the Darwin Initiative, which funds projects in countries rich in biodiversity but poor in resources. Current projects include tracking whale sharks along Belize's Barrier Reef, where University of York scientists are working with local fishermen and conservation groups, and setting up a sustainable sea cucumber fishery in Egypt, where the University of Hull is working with Egyptian scientists along the Red Sea Coast.
