QCA exam task force announced
Ken Boston, chief of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, today announced the creation of an "examinations task force". It will be made up of the chief executives of the exam boards, the chief executives of the Welsh and Northern Irish regulators and head teachers' leaders. The task force will meet every two weeks, or more frequently if necessary, until this school year's exams have been completed to ensure the process runs smoothly. Mr Boston admitted at the QCA's annual stakeholders conference in London that the authority's credibility was "on the line" after a turbulent period that saw chairman Sir William Stubbs sacked by eucation scretary Estelle Morris.
Hull sets up redundancy committee
Hull University has set up a redundancy committee to look at potential job losses so it can balance its books. Its voluntary redundancy scheme has not attracted interest. It is also looking at other ways of cutting costs
Oxford students protest at Trinity gate plan
Oxford University students are dismayed by plans to install "ugly" metal gates at the entrance to a college. Planning permission has been granted for 8ft-high security gates and railings outside Trinity College's porter’s lodge in Broad Street.
Magnus Magnusson installed as Glasgow chancellor
Former Mastermind host Magnus Magnusson today swapped the famous black leather seat for the chancellor's chair at Glasgow Caledonian University. He was installed at Glasgow's City Chambers at a ceremony attended by the city's Lord Provost, academics and business leaders.
