Deaf student considers Imperial offer
Deaf teenager Anastasia Fedotova, rejected by Oxford despite getting six top grade A levels, was today considering an offer of a place from Imperial College London. Her mother said she may take a year out and apply to Cambridge next year.

Struggling Plymouth students given maths help
Plymouth University students are to be given extra tutoring in maths and statistics because they lack the basic skills. Those taking part in a pilot scheme will be given written and online work, as well as one-to-one help at a drop-in centre. David Graham, from the department of mathematics and statistics, said a “significant minority” of undergraduates struggled with maths in a variety of courses.

IT appeal wanes in Ireland
Students in the Irish Republic are turning their backs on computer courses and opting for more traditional subjects, according to university figures published today. Returns from Ireland’s Central Applications Office confirmed that offers were being sent to 72 per cent of applicants, 4 per cent down on last year and 7 per cent less than in 2000.

Man interviewed in connection with Liverpool death
A man was today helping police with their inquiries after a woman fell to her death from a Liverpool University building. The 35-year-old woman was discovered at the foot of the Roxby Building yesterday. It is believed she fell.

Tony Hopkins, former chief executive of Northern Ireland’s Industrial Development Board, has been appointed chairman of the reconstituted Northern Ireland Higher Education Council.

Dundee leads breast cancer-HRT research
Dundee University is seeking 100 Scotswomen who have had breast cancer and are experiencing problems with the menopause. It is leading Scottish research in a United Kingdom study that aims to prove that breast cancer sufferers can safely take Hormone Replacement Therapy to alleviate symptoms of the menopause.
