Getting a promotion may increase the likelihood of mental ill-health, according to a study by researchers at the University of Warwick. A rise up the career ladder was found to increase mental strain by an average of 10 per cent and to give workers up to 20 per cent less time to visit the doctor. The findings, revealed by a statistical analysis of a long-term data collection survey, run contrary to the theory that health improves in parallel with job status because those in high positions enjoy more control over their work environment.
