Massive cuts in carbon emissions can be achieved while preserving a decent standard of life, according to researchers. Academics at the Research Group on Lifestyles, Values and the Environment at the University of Surrey calculated the greenhouse gas emissions needed to provide all the goods and services to the "minimum income standard" deemed necessary for a decent life. Their study found that average emissions would be 37 per cent lower than today if this "reduced consumption scenario" was followed - a figure they claim would not jeopardise social well-being.
