University of Southampton - Sound investment

A department has been awarded almost £600,000 to bring back to life a type of medieval music not heard for more than 700 years. The department of music at the University of Southampton will work with partners in York and Australia to examine archived manuscripts from across Europe of the conductus - vocal compositions that merge Latin poetry and music. After the manuscripts - which date back to the 12th and 13th centuries - have been catalogued, selected works will be performed by musicians and recorded for commercial release.
