A new research centre that houses the world's most powerful microscope has opened. The Kroto Centre for High Resolution Imaging and Analysis at the University of Sheffield was officially opened last month by Nobel prizewinning chemist and Sheffield graduate Sir Harry Kroto. The centre, part financed by the European Union's European Regional Development Fund, will examine the structure and composition of materials at atomic and subatomic scales. Professor Kroto was one of three recipients of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the discovery of buckyballs: a new form of carbon.
