Nearly six decades after completing his studies at the University of Sheffield, a medical graduate has finally been presented with his degree certificate. Peter Lee, now 82, was unable to attend his own graduation ceremony in 1949 as he was single-handedly running a casualty department at Sheffield's old Royal Infirmary Hospital.

He talks, sweats, bleeds and vomits to order, and if you press the right buttons he will even have a heart attack. He is the latest recruit to the teaching staff of the University of Portsmouth's Expert Centre, helping to train healthcare professionals in the latest techniques of emergency aid. But iStan is no ordinary man; he is in fact the world's most advanced patient simulator and the first with wireless remote control, effective from up to 50ft away. Portsmouth is the first university in England to acquire the £40,000 mannequin, which can be realistically filled with blood and other bodily fluids. According to Lesley-Jane Eales-Reynolds, director of the Expert Centre: "For paramedic students he can be put in a crashed car or collapsed at the foot of some stairs, which is precisely the sort of situation they are likely to encounter in the real world."
