Pet cats could be responsible for killing up to 10,000 prey animals per sq km in urban areas, significantly affecting urban bird species. Researchers at the University of Reading are looking beyond more obvious causes affecting bird populations, such as habitat loss, and analysing the contribution of domestic cats. Scientists are quantifying their predation rates, hunting movements and home ranges.
