A department of archaeology is celebrating its status as the only academic department in Britain boasting five British Academy fellows. Martin Bell, professor of environmental archaeology at the University of Reading, is the latest to win a fellowship. Academics are made fellows of the British Academy in recognition of excellence in the humanities and social sciences. Only one or two scholars a year are elected in most fields. Professor Bell's research concerns the contribution archaeology makes to understanding environmental change.
