University of Leeds - Let's talk about sex

People with learning difficulties are being hampered by a lack of basic sex education, which is leaving them embarrassed, vulnerable and confused. This is the finding of a three-year project by the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of Leeds, which examined how people with learning difficulties understand sex. It discovered that some are even unaware that it can lead to pregnancy. "People with learning difficulties have more rights and more freedom than ever, and are much more likely to be living in the community...But they don't have the training and information to make the right choices," said Ruth Garbutt, the research fellow who led the work.
