Making biofuel from material such as wood or straw may be easier following the discovery of a key plant enzyme by scientists. University of Cambridge researchers identified and studied the genes for two enzymes that toughen plant material and make it difficult to extract sugars for bioethanol and other products. A spokesman for the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, which funded the project, said the findings could increase the economic viability of extracting biofuels from a variety of sources.
