Ulster boosts local regeneration with arts-driven campus

Ulster University has unveiled plans for a £40 million campus in central Belfast.

The university has not yet secured the funding, but has won support from the city council's planning committee for the development, which aims to regenerate the city's cathedral quarter.

Wallace Ewart, provost of UU's existing Belfast campus, said: "The most important thing in developing a university campus is to look at the focus of the interaction between the university, the community and the business sector."

Plans are under way for an arts and cultural centre in the area. Professor Ewart said: "What could be better as a focal point for that arts and cultural quarter than an arts-driven campus?" The campus is expected to have 3,000 students and will offer a range of degrees including art and design and communication, media and journalism studies. It is expected to generate 690 jobs.
