Brussels, 6 January 2003

The Bernard Gregory Association has launched its 2003 programme entitled 'Skills evaluation - A new chapter for the thesis'. The programme aims to help PhD students (in the last stages of completing their thesis) assess their skills and in turn recognise the value of the professional experience obtained during the thesis process.

The programme is headed by the Bernard Gregory Association on behalf of the French Ministry of Research and is in association with the Ile-de-France region, the national centre for scientific research (CNRS) and the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).

Preparing a PhD thesis constitutes the first stage in gaining professional experience: Not only does it provide PhD students with a sound basis in research skills, it also enables them to acquire other types of important skills; project management, time-keeping, creating partnerships. These additional skills help to open up a greater variety of professional opportunities. However, often enough, students have difficulties in discerning these skills and how they can be exploited in a business environment.

The main objectives of the programme are:

- A critical analysis, from a project management perspective, of the process of preparing and writing a thesis.

- Identifying and enhancing professional experience and skills development during the thesis.

The programme is open to students, from all disciplines that are presenting their thesis in 2003, whether they foresee a career in the public or private sector. In agreement with the thesis supervisor, the university representative responsible for the PhD programmes nominates candidates whose names are then communicated to the Bernard Gregory Association.
