Established in 1994, the award was created to honour an outstanding woman who has made significant contributions to the scientific community. The objectives of the award, which includes a $25,000 research grant to the recipient, are to recognise distinguished achievement and to provide a strong role model to motivate and encourage the next generation of young women scientists, engineers and mathematicians. Nominees may represent any discipline in the natural sciences, and may be conducting research in either the public or private sector. DYSTONIA MEDICAL RESEARCH
FOUNDATION
Research Grant
Past studies funded by the foundation have focused on genetics, new treatments, and the anatomy and physiology of the basal ganglia. In addition to these areas of study, the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation would especially encourage grant applications in the
following areas:
1. The generation of antibodies to TorsinA to make possible studies of protein expression and regulation. 2. The study of protein-protein interactions of TorsinA using the yeast two-hybrid system or affinity techniques. 3. Studies of the structural biology of TorsinA.
4. Studies of the protein chemistry
of TorsinA. 5. Studies of the cellular neurobiology of TorsinA, particularly in primary cell cultures of neurons known to express TorsinA, including mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons, cerebellar granule cells and hippocampal pyramidal neurons. 6. Studies of animal and cell culture models, in which the molecular pathogenesis of mutant TorsinA can be studied are also encouraged. Dystonia-related research must be hypothesis-driven. TOSHIBA
Fellowship Programme
Fellows will have the opportunity to work with Japanese researchers in Toshiba's research laboratories where the working language is English. They are also encouraged to become familiar with Japanese industry and culture. Toshiba has selected 14 priority research areas (details on the web). Eligible researchers are invited to make a proposal either on one of these specific themes or in a related specialist area. Candidates must be: a citizen of an EU member state under 35 years of age at October 1, 2000; in possession of a PhD or expected to obtain one by March 1, 2001; currently working in a UK government or academic institution.
