Robert Blair Fellowship in Applied Science and Technology One award, value up to Pounds 10,000 will be offered for academic year 1999/2000 for advanced study or research abroad in Applied Science and Technology. Candidates must be British citizens, at least 21 years of age.

The Royal College of Surgeons
Surgical Research Fellowship Scheme To be eligible surgeons should be a Fellow/Member of this College, in a training post or an SHO who has passed the MCQ papers of the MRCS Eng examination. In 1999/2000 there are approximately 25 one-year Fellowships in any branch/specialty of surgery.

International Joint Research Grant Programme
NEDO is a Japanese governmental implementing agency providing funding for collaborative research. This programme aims to contribute to the enhancement of the international level of industrial technology as well as to the advancement of international exchange by supporting international joint research teams.
Research grants will be provided to International Joint Research Teams that fulfil the following main requirements: 1. Each team, in principle, must be composed of four or more researchers; 2. Each team must consist of researchers of two or more different nationalities; 3. The research organisations where the team members' major activities take place must be located in two or more countries; 4. Each team must appoint a research coordinator and an accounting coordinator.
The 1999 programme provides for research in the following areas: Materials - Basic research concerning the investigation, elucidation and practical use of materials which will result in the creation of new industries.
Energy - (Related to Power Generation) Practical research on electric power generation technologies using oil-alternative energy, on load leveling technologies and on global environment conservation related to these technologies. (Efficient Use) Practical research on technologies concerning the rationalisation of energy use, such as saving energy (excluding electric power generation technologies).
International Standard Development - Practical research aiming at establishment of international standards to contribute to industrial technology.
Global Environment - (Practice research) Practical research concerning the production, generation and use of oil-alternative energy (excluding electric power generation technologies) which contributes to conservation and improvement of the global environment. Basic research in the global environment area will not be provided with grants in 1999.

National Primary Care Development Programme Call for Applications
The NHS R&D strategy aims to create a knowledge-based health service in which clinical, managerial and policy decisions are based on sound information about research findings and scientific developments. More than 90 per cent of contacts between the population and the NHS take place in primary care. Evidence suggests that the capacity of primary care to undertake the R&D necessary to provide a firm evidence base is limited. Following the NHS Executive report 'R&D in Primary Care' the Director of Research & Development invites applications for the following: Primary Care Researcher Development awards
Intended to ensure that individuals of outstanding research potential are identified and supported in an appropriate training environment. Awards will provide career guidance and personal mentoring by a senior academic as well as personal support. Awards will be for 3 years (or 4 years part-time) and will cover salary, tuition, a contribution towards research costs and a conference allowance.
Primary Care Career Scientist awards
Intended to provide a secure platform to enable clinicians and non-clinicians of exceptional ability to develop a career structure. Candidates should be at the stage of developing their own programme of research and are therefore likely to have held high level research posts or be able to demonstrate a substantial record in a relevant research area. Awards will cover salary, tuition, conferences and a contribution towards research costs. Posts, which will be for 5 years, will be awarded to the individual and not tied to a specific institution.
Applications are particularly welcome from non-medical clinical disciplines. Both awards schemes are open to applicants from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Initiative in Prokaryotic Responses to Environmental Stress (PRES) Call for Proposals
PRES is a multidisciplinary programme aimed at understanding *the ways in which bacteria sense the environmental inputs represented by physical, chemical and biological stresses *the mechanisms by which the bacteria make responses, at the molecular level, to these signals by perceiving and transducing them to cause changes in gene expression.
*how these responses lead to new effects via variations in physiological and metabolic properties, in structures, and the interactions with the physical and biological environment.
PRES is open to the following institutions: *UK universities and colleges *BBSRC approved academic analogues *BBSRC-sponsored institutes.

Through the EU-commission's Training and Mobility for Researchers programme, access to the ALOMAR Large-Scale Facility is offered for researchers from Member States of the European Union and Associated States. Selected projects will receive access to the facility free of charge, and reimbursement of travel and subsistence cost. The facility comprises an observatory with optical instruments and several nearby sites with radar instruments. The observatory is located close to the And?ya Rocket Range, on top of the 379m high mountain Ramnan. The And?ya Rocket Range and the ALOMAR sites are located on the island And?ya in North Norway.

These may be held on the basis of a part-time working option.
Support Research Fellowships to provide a 12-month period of study leave to carry out research on a full-time basis in the biological, biochemical, physical or clinical sciences related to medicine.
Postgraduate Scholarships of up to three years' duration to fund research leading to PhD degree of a Scottish university. There is no preference for subject and at least one award annually is made in a non-scientific discipline.
