Sheffield celebrates research cash success

Research income at the University of Sheffield was up 61 per cent in 2001-02 compared with the previous year.

Vice-chancellor Bob Boucher said: "It's quite an achievement to go from just under £62 million to within spitting distance of £100 million in the space of a year. Joint venturesI have contributed a lot to our success."

One of the awards has part-funded the White Rose Consortium supercomputer grid, which puts shared computing power at the disposal of researchers at Sheffield, Leeds and York universities. The combined research income of these three universities is greater than that of either Oxford or Cambridge.
