Scene stealers

三月 24, 2000

Researchers at the University of Surrey are putting human intelligence back into robots operating in hazardous environments such as battlefields or sewers.

The "augmented reality" research by the mechatronic systems and robotics research group is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency and North West Water.

The aim of the research is to give the vehicle's operator much richer data from the scene, allowing tasks to be carried out more quickly and efficiently. The robots being developed by the Surrey team are equipped with two video cameras mounted on an articulating mechanical "neck". The two streams of video data coming from the cameras are combined to create a three-dimensional image.
