Matthew Evans, chairman of Faber and Faber and of the Library and Information Commission, has been appointed chairman of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, which will replace the LIC and the Museums and Galleries Commission by April next year.

Valerie Wilson, former principal research officer in the educational research unit of the Scottish Office, has been appointed director of the Scottish Council for Research in Education. She takes up the post this month, succeeding Wynne Harlen, who retired in May.

Veronica Dunn, an education officer with Newcastle education department, has been elected vice-president of public service union Unison.

Jane Newell, a former civil servant, has been appointed chairman of the board of governors at South Bank University. She succeeds Christopher McLaren, who is retiring. Broadcaster Trevor McDonald will be installed as South Bank's chancellor on November 2.

Paul Teague, former professor of public policy, economics and law at the University of Ulster, has been appointed to a chair in management at Queen's University of Belfast.

Paliakarakadu Basheer, former reader in civil engineering at Queen's, has been appointed to a chair of structural materials.

Samuel Porter, previously reader in sociology at Queen's, has been appointed to a chair in nursing research.

Nicholas Thomas, professor and director of the centre for cross-cultural research at the Australian National University, has been appointed professor of anth- ropology at Goldsmiths College.
