Tests on human brain tissue removed from people with epilepsy have raised hopes of new treatments for sufferers of the condition. Scientists at Newcastle University have recorded spontaneous epileptic activity in brain tissue removed from patients undergoing neurosurgery. The research has revealed that a type of brain wave associated with epilepsy is caused by electrical connections between nerve cells in the brain, rather than chemical ones. Traditional drugs do not affect these epileptic waves.
