The two Councils are inviting joint bids from environmental and medical scientists on the relationship between human health and environmental variables. In the past, collaborations between environmental and medical scientists have been relatively few and one of the primary purposes of this initiative is to encourage such collaborations.
A key issue to be addressed is establishing whether or not there is a causal link between environmental variation and a health outcome. Applicants will therefore need to address problems such as measures of exposure (intensity/duration), confounding factors and time-lags. No particular subjects areas have been highlighted in advance but examples of possible topics might include the relationship between human health and: poor air quality, poor water quality, ionising and non-ionising radiation, resistance of microorganisms in the natural environment to anti-microbial agents, and climate change.
