Madman seeks explosive ally

Chemist and former stage technician Roy Lowry of the University of Plymouth is planning to create the world's largest Catherine wheel - but needs someone to assist him.

Dr Lowry has the go-ahead from Plymouth City Council for the attempt, which will take place during the National Firework Championships in Plymouth in August.

He has lined up Kimbleton Fireworks, the UK's only firework manufacturer, to supply the fire power. All he needs is someone to construct the wheel, which will be 30m in diameter and have just two arms.

Dr Lowry is looking for someone "as mad as (he is)", who has a workshop that's large enough to build the wheel and has expertise in low-friction bearings for slow rotation on large applications.

He told The THES : "It's big, it's silly - let's do it."
