With a current chronic shortage of organ donors boosting demand for new therapies involving the repair or replacement of cells, tissues or organs, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council is backing a new specialist centre in regenerative medicine with £6 million-worth of funding. To be located at Loughborough University, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham and Keele University, the Doctoral Training Centre in Regenerative Medicine aims to train scientists in this emerging area of research.
Meanwhile a sculpture by artist John Atkin has been unveiled in Beijing as part of the celebrations for the Olympic Games. Mr Atkin, a reader in fine art at Loughborough University, was the only British artist chosen from a global field of 2,600 applicants to have his work exhibited in the Olympic Park.
