Colleges ask Ofsted for time to adapt
Further education colleges today pleaded with Ofsted to give them time to adapt to its demands after it produced could-do-better assessments of Redbridge College, London, Teesside Tertiary College, Middlesbrough, and Brooklands College, Weybridge, Surrey.

£500 boost for every Scottish student nurse
Scotland’s student nurses will each receive a cash boost of about £500 a year thanks to a £10.8 million investment in their education announced today under the Scottish Nursing and Midwifery Bursary Scheme.

Ucas consortium to set up Learndirect database
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service has joined forces with Hotcourses and the University of Sheffield to provide a national database of courses for Learndirect, the learning provider for the University for Industry, under a £3.4 million, three-year contract.

Edinburgh principal steps down
Sir Stewart Sutherland, principal of Edinburgh University, will step down in September 2002 after eight years in the post. He said he was determined to see the university’s restructuring exercise and fundraising campaign on a firm footing before he left.
