Hodge makes £250,000 commitment to access
Education and skills minister Margaret Hodge today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to widening participation. At the Universities UK annual conference in London she announced a further £250,000 for university summer schools this year.
Science and technology needs under scrutiny
The government has launched a consultation on how higher education is meeting the supply needs of science and technology research. The inquiry, to feed into the 2002 spending review, will be led by Sir Gareth Roberts, president of Wolfson College, Oxford.
Broadcaster awarded St Andrews doctorate
Broadcaster Sheena McDonald was today receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of St Andrews. Ms McDonald was knocked down by a police van answering a 999 call in February 1999 and was in a coma for 72 hours. Also today the Prince of Wales was being made a doctor of laws at Glasgow University.
Abertay makes mark in publishing world
The University of Abertay, Dundee, has launched its own university press with the publication of a book, edited by staff in its school of social and health sciences, on the issues facing Scottish society and identity.
