Unions link for learning
The first trade union lifelong learning alliance, spanning schools, colleges and universities will be created today with the signing of a partnership agreement between two education unions. The Association of University Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers plan to work jointly on education policy, responses on government consultations and services and support for members.

Custard pie thrown at minister
International development secretary Clare Short was the victim of a custard-pie protest at Bangor University last night. She was attacked by three women, one of whom was arrested. The purpose of the attack is not known.

HE website launched
Hero, the higher education website supported by the funding councils, the research councils and the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, among others, was launched at the House of Commons today by Barry Sheerman MP. The site covers study, research, business, staff, culture and institutions. Intended users include potential students and university research clients as well as academics.
