Consortium to boost enterprise in Midlands 
Science minister Lord Sainsbury has launched a £10 million enterprise initiative by eight West Midlands universities, the Mercia Institute of Enterprise. It will provide training opportunities for the universities' science and engineering students, and spin off technology firms.

OU denies Dome rumours
The Open University has again denied that it would be a potential tenant if the Legacy consortium took over the Millennium Dome. A report in The Times today suggests that Legacy has failed to let space in the dome, which it plans to convert into a hi-tech business park. Legacy claimed to have a deal with the OU.

Scientists at Glasgow University have made a breakthrough in the fight against small cell lung cancer that could see the development of new drugs to combat the disease within three to five years. The team has discovered why cancer cells divide so often and spread out of control.
