Trials of cheap Aids vaccine under way
Scientists starting a new phase of trials on a revolutionary Aids vaccine have started injecting 26 British volunteers with the treatment. The Medical Research Council and Imperial College, London, are testing what they hope will be a cheap immunisation against one of the commonest strains in Africa.
Festival spotlights 'green' benefits
The Edinburgh International Science Festival was today launched with an exhibition on how environmental science has made a difference to everyday lives. The display, which covers research on tropical plants, new vaccines and measures to protect the environment, was put on at the city’s Royal Botanic Garden.

Forty student officers in the new police service of Northern Ireland, which replaced the Royal Ulster Constabulary, graduated today from a unique mandatory training course at Ulster University’s Centre for Police Studies.
California recalls students from Israel
The University of California has this week recalled its students from Israel and indefinitely suspended study programmes there in the face of escalating violence. Twenty-seven students from UCLA, Berkeley and other campuses were told to pack their bags as soon as possible.
