£380m injection for UK science
Science projects are to receive £380 million of government funding over the next ten years. Science minister Lord Sainsbury made the announcement following a meeting of the European Space Agency Council in Edinburgh. The UK investment includes programmes to develop commercial space markets, underpin environment policy and maintain outstanding scientific achievements.
Straw's son tops Oxford vote
William Straw, son of UK foreign Secretary Jack Straw, has been elected president of the Oxford University Students Union. He is a fierce opponent of tuition fees and wants to create a central student facility at Oxford.
Adult skills projects receive £5m
Adult skills minister John Healey today announced a £5 million funding boost for projects to encourage more adults to return to learning. The money, an extension to the Adult and Community Learning Fund, will fund new projects for up to two years from April 2002.
Surrey campus accident kills two
Two young men died after one lost control of a car and careered into a lamp-post on the University of Surrey campus, police said today.The driver and his passenger, who were being formally identified later today, were pronounced dead at the scene.
