SA institutions are running on red ink
Three of South Africa’s historically black universities have combined overdrafts of R193 million (£16 million), education minister Kader Asmal said. They are the University of Transkei (R78 million), the University of Fort Hare (R65 million) and the University of the Western Cape (R50 million).

Russian academic challenges state governor
On the eve of Sunday’s elections for a new governor of the Irkutsk province of Russia, an academic at the state university has challenged the right of the current governor to seek re-election. Lyudmila Drobysheva and three other candidates have filed a lawsuit accusing governor Boris Govorin of abuse of office and violating the election rules.
