Egyptian professor jailed
A professor of political sociology at the American University of Cairo has been sentenced to seven years in prison for undermining the dignity of the state and related offences. Twenty-seven colleagues of Saad Eddin Ibrahim, at the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies, which Professor Ibrahim established in Cairo in 1988, were also sent to prison.

Yale dons oppose degree for US president
More than 200 Yale University academics boycotted George W. Bush’s visit to receive an honorary degree. A statement signed by 208 Yale professors said: "There is nothing about his performance thus far which merits the decisive accolade."

Pay strike in Madagascar
Lecturers at the National University of Madagascar have begun an indefinite strike in support of better pay and conditions, and an independent process to appoint a new vice-chancellor.
