(Photograph) - Modern identities: Two centres for Jewish studies are being launched in the North of England, bringing together scholars with interests in Jewish literature, music, art, religion, culture and history.

At Leeds University Eva Frojmovic, Montague Burton fellow in Jewish studies (right), is course director of the new MA in modern Jewish studies which will offer a range of options from Jewish thought to Jewish art. Dr Frojmovic is preparing an exhibition of Hebrew manuscripts and rare books for the Roth Collection, to open in October 1996.

Manchester University's Jewish Studies Centre, also backed by a new MA, has staff with interests in the Dead Sea Scrolls, rabinics, Jewish history and the Bible, and is intending to forge links with the city's sizeable Jewish community.
