An international network of scholars is set to analyse nationalistic tensions in East Asia. Led by academics at the Institute of Education, the project will encourage research into how schooling and other influences help shape popular perceptions of Japan and China. Edward Vickers, reader in education at the institution, said: "Collaborative research promoted through this network will shed important light on how and why certain portrayals of Japan have become institutionalised in school curricula, museums, media and vehicles for youth culture among Japan's neighbours." The project also involves the University of Leeds and Birkbeck, University of London.
