Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes 3 billion years ago, a team from Imperial College London and University College London has found. The project, funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, examined detailed satellite images taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Their findings contradict earlier assumptions that the planet was too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface during that period.
