Graeme Taylor
, senior lecturer in geophysics from the University of Plymouth has been awarded a Royal Society Grant of £7,350, to carry out palaeomagnetic research in northern Patagonia, South America. The work will be undertaken with colleagues in the palaeomagnetic group at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Professor C. K. Catchpole , Biological Sciences: a three-year grant of £161,738 from NERC for an investigation into how male quality affects maternal investment in songbirds.

Professor D. Charlton , Music: a 3-year grant of £310,908 from AHRB for the British Contribution to Series A/ii of Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM).

Professor C. Bradley , Psychology: a one-year grant of £77,035 from Glaxo Wellcome for the psychometric evaluation of translations of the HIVTSQ produced by Glaxo Wellcome.

Professor G. Dickson , Biological Sciences: £21,230 from Valigen to develop chimeraplasty.

Dr S. Cutting , Biological Sciences: £10,540 from the Wellcome Trust for the development of bacterial spores for oral immunisation against foot and mouth disease and tetanus.

Dr A. Morland , Psychology: £24,207 from the Wellcome Trust for a six months of functional studies on human patients with visual dysfunction of cortical and retinal origin.

Dr T. Pincus , Psychology: £4,635 from the National Organisation for Healthy Backs to develop and test a new tool for people with musculoskeletal pain:the Depression, Anxiety and Positive wellbeing scale (DAPS).

Dr R. Walker , Psychology: a 3-year grant of £92,302 from the Leverhulme Trust for a study of oculomotor selection: choosing targets and inhibiting distractors.

Dr D. McGregor , Geography: a six-month grant of £16,224 from the Department for International Development to enable the sustainability of the KUMINFO geographical information system.

Dr G. Blair , Physics: a 2-year grant of £55,151 from PPARC to develop laser based beam diagnostics for the future linear collider.

Dr G. Bonsaver , Italian: £2,370 from AHRB for From Black to Red: Literature and Politics in Italy, 1932-1962 .
