Sir William Utting

has been appointed head of the college's council, having been a member since 1993 and the deputy chair 1995-999. He is president of the National Institute for Social Work (chief inspector in the Social Services Inspectorate of the DHSS from 1985 to 1991); he is also president of the Mental Health Foundation and a member of the Neill Committee (formerly the Nolan Committee), the Committee on Standards in Public Life. Sir Robert Balchin will continue as Deputy Chair of Council.

The Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association

The CPHVA has elected Pauline Pearson as its new chair. A senior lecturer in primary care nursing at the University of Newcastle and head of the department of primary health care, Dr Pearson qualified as a health visitor in 1979 and practiced until 1993.
