Prince Charles has become patron and Lord Macfarlane of Bearsden honorary president Glasgow School of Art .

Wallace Pitcher, emeritus professor of geology and Leverhulme emeritus research fellow at the University of Liverpool, has been elected socio honorario of the Geological Society of Peru.

David Hopkins of Stirling University and Anthony Powell of Herriot-Watt University have been awarded Royal Society of Edinburgh support research fellowships.

James Hough, professor of astrophysics and dean of natural sciences at the University of Hertfordshire, has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society.

Raimondo Ascione, research registrar at the Bristol Heart Institute, has been awarded the John Parker Gold Medal by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.

The British Pharmacological Society has awarded the 2001 Wellcome Gold Medal to Jeff Watkins, emeritus professor of pharmacology at the University of Bristol.
