The University of Ulster has given the 14th Dalai Lama an honorary degree (DLitt).
Steve Bull , former footballer with Wolverhampton Wanderers, has received an honorary fellowship from the University of Wolverhampton 's school of health sciences.
The following have been elected fellows of Imperial College : Brigitte A. Askonas , former head of immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research, London, and vice-president of the Royal Society; David Q. Mayne , former head of electrical engineering; Steven V. Ley , head of organic chemistry at the University of Cambridge.
The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts has announced the following awards for invention, innovation and education projects: Richard Dreyden , a senior lecturer in biological sciences, has been awarded £45,000 for his prototype of a transitional sailing rig; George Lambert , a mechanical and chemical engineer, will receive £56,000 for his design of a safety device that prevents tankers from overturning; Carol Ann Duffy , a poet, gets £75,000 to develop her work; Dryden Goodwin and Jason Rinaldi , artists, have been awarded £75,000 and £70,000 to develop their experimental approaches; Simon Tegala , an artist, has been given £67,236 to continue his training in digital editing and in internet and webcasting design. Hi8us , a group that has produced youth dramas for television and online teaching aids, gets £130,000 to evaluate the educational potential of web-based drama; Motivate , established by Cambridge University's Millennium Maths Project, gets £164,315 to make maths more accessible to secondary school pupils.
