Patrick Moore has been presented with a special Millennium Award in the form of a sundial by the Royal Astronomical Society , in recognition of his outstanding contribution to astronomy.

The Globe Theatre has appointed Tony Howard , senior lecturer in the department of English and comparative literary studies at the University of Warwick, its 2000 International Shakespeare Globe fellow .

Stephen Denyer , head of the school of pharmacy and biomolecular sciences at the University of Brighton, has been designated a fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain .

Ian Stewart , professor of mathematics at the University of Warwick, has been awarded Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Gold Medal for 2000 for exceptional service to mathematics education and research.

Imperial College has announced: Igor Aleksander awarded the 2000 Institution of Electronic Engineers Achievement Medal ; emeritus professor Colin Caro elected a founding fellow of the International Academy for Medical and Biological Engineering ; Anne Dell received the Roy L. Whistler Award at the 20th International Carbohydrate Symposium in Hamburg; Andrew David Miller elected president of the International Society of Cancer Gene Therapy and received the Novartis Young Investigator Award ; Tony Barrett won the Glaxo-Wellcome Award for Outstanding Achievement in Organic Chemistry 2000 .
