Brussels, 16 January 2002

The University of Bonn is hoping to re-establish its long standing links with the University of Kabul, particularly with Afghan scientists.

From the beginning of the 1960s, the two universities enjoyed a partnership which led to many exchange activities in the area of research and teaching for over 20 years. Rector for research and scientific growth, Professor Dr Andreas Hirner, believes that this relationship can be re-established in the near future.

'We want to invest in this initiative for the long term. Some measures could begin soon, despite the still very limited conditions.'

The university has already outlined possible themes for cooperation, including the training of doctors and science teachers as well as joint projects in geology, marine science, agriculture and biology.

Bonn University has re-established its Kabul commission and plans for a delegation to visit Kabul soon in order to assess the problems and areas where help should be directed.
