First female chairs

Oxford has appointed its first female professors of philosophy and theology. Dorothy Edgington, professor of philosophy at Birkbeck College, London, has been appointed to the Waynflete professorship of metaphysical philosophy. The Oxford philosophy faculty is one of the largest in the world. Marilyn McCord Adams has been appointed to the regius professorship of divinity. She currently holds the Horace Pitkin chair of historical theology at Yale University Divinity School. In 1997, she was the Alexander Robertson lecturer at Glasgow's Divinity School. In 1999, she was the Gifford lecturer at St Andrews University.
