The BBSRC is sponsoring research on the H5N1 form of avian influenza, both the pathogen and its hosts - and the interactions between them - and supports facilities suitable for in vivo studies at the Institute for Animal Health and the Roslin Institute. Accordingly, the Council is making available an additional £4.5 million of responsive-mode funding specifically for projects to improve scientific understanding of avian influenza, with the aim of enabling more effective control of the disease.
