Crisis-struck energy firm BP should take note - marine bacteria could be the key to cleaning up oil spills without further damage to the environment, according to scientists. Microbiologists at Bangor University have found that harnessing naturally occurring microbes and adding nutrients to increase their capacity to digest oil could offer a solution to dealing with oil pollution. Bangor is trialling the approach in the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Mediterranean and the early results are positive, although the study is at too early a stage to feed into the clean-up from the ongoing oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
