Industrial action at the University of Northumbria was expected to be scaled down this week as managers ruled out compulsory redundancies.
Members of lecturers' union Natfhe had been boycotting statutory meetings since the threat of 130 job losses surfaced late last year. Now, 69 staff have volunteered for redundancies, and financial targets are expected to be met without more cuts.
A union spokesperson said remaining staff fear that their workloads will rise and that action in support of the national dispute over pay will continue.
At Teesside University, a delayed assessment board for nursing students went ahead on Monday night. Students were informed of a pass or fail mark to allow them to register with professional bodies and take posts in the health service.
