We're OK in the UK

Paul Ormerod repeats the common fallacy that the performance of US universities has "dramatically pulled away" from "Oxbridge, London School of Economics and the like" (Opinion, March 25).

The latest Times Higher league tables comprehensively discredit this claim. The overall ranking shows Oxford (5), Cambridge (6), LSE (11), Imperial College London (14); in science: Cambridge (1), Oxford (2), Imperial (10); in arts and humanities: Oxford (2), Cambridge (5), LSE (10); in social science: LSE (2), Oxford (4), Cambridge (8); and in the peer-review top ten listing: Oxford (3), Cambridge (4).

The remarkable truth about the leading UK universities is that despite underfunding and overregulation some continue to perform as well as and some better than those of other countries, including the US, on almost all measures.
