Trouble and strife

In his review of Michael Millgate's Thomas Hardy: A Biography Revisited (March 18), Terry Eagleton describes Hardy's first wife as "snobbish" and "imperious". I would not disagree with this assessment of Emma, but it is unfair (and simplistic) to suggest that she alone was the cause of Hardy's depressions.
