Perhaps David Walker is too dismissive of Michael Oakeshott's influence on the Tories ("A traditionalist with the eye of a sceptic", THES , January 18). Anyone reading Iain Duncan Smith's "vision" for his party would have detected some Oakeshottean themes, such as the rejection of grand ideology as the foundation for political thought and action.
