Fat chance

五月 21, 2004

My colleagues are right to say that the strategy Oxford University has sent round for consultation does not divide colleges and the university (Letters, May 14).

But like the identical proposals for the expansion of Cambridge University, it raises the question of why the managers of a loss-making business propose a 25 per cent expansion on the basis of inadequate resources.

Oxford and Cambridge each have twice as many undergraduates as Harvard University and getting on for twice as many research students already. I'd have thought skinny and rich beats bloated and poor.
